I turn complex plants into practical, safe, efficient reality. I lead RAE’s process standards – balances, PFDs/P&IDs, control philosophy, and the safety basis (HAZOP/LOPA, ATEX, DSEAR)—and work day-to-day with piping, mechanical, E&I, projects and our vessel-design specialist so designs are buildable and operable. I stay hands-on with simulation, equipment sizing and risk, and I mentor engineers to raise capability.

Selected focus areas: Water & wastewater (dosing/neutralisation, instrumentation, operator-friendly modular packages) • Carbon capture (advisory/integration) -translate third-party/proprietary designs into operating envelopes; explain trade-offs (e.g., vacuum vs pressure); align controls/utilities for commissioning and operation • Solvents & specialty chemicals (safe storage/transfer, API/ISO-aligned relief) • Bulk solids (flour/ash/gypsum handling) • Front-end & bids (standardisation and value engineering to reduce complexity, RFIs and install hours).

I have thirty five years’ experience working on the design and drawing of pressure vessels, tanks, pipework, skids, steelwork and site layouts. My association with Richard Alan goes back twenty seven years, where I first worked as a draughtsman on water treatment equipment. I have worked with many varied design teams over the years, mainly in the chemical, pharmaceutical, water and food industries.

I have been a CAD design draughtsman for many years, but have also held the roles of CAD manager at Galglass Ltd. and was Design Office Manager at Richard Alan Engineering for ten years. My current role is Tanks & Vessels Design Manager.

Away from work I have a wife, Carol, and two children, Emily & Iwan. One of my hobbies is playing cornet with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band

Haaroon is a key member of our proposal team, offering support to our clients with their tanks, pressure vessel and silo design.  He has been with Richard Alan for over 5 years, where he prepares quotations for bespoke tanks and vessels. He joined the company after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

Our Managing Director, Robert, leads the senior management team with energy and dedication. He sets the standard for the organisation by leading from the front and inspiring those around him. Robert’s passion for the business and the wider engineering community is evident in his approach, motivating both his colleagues and the broader team through his infectious enthusiasm.

I joined Richard Alan Engineering in 1973 straight from school, the business was then just three years old. As the years past and the business grew it became my passion and after taking over from the founding fathers in 1993 the business consumed a big part of my life with an ambition to grow a successful group of companies.

Without doubt the best decision I ever made was to take the ambitious decision to move the business from the old chapel in Batley Carr to the site at Shaw Cross business park, this along with 100+ other best decisions in employing each one of our great people.

My interests include spending lots of time with my wife Jill, weekends in our east coast caravan… the best of times, cooking, thinking about cars I have no room for and trying to play golf!

As for the future, I will keep working along with attaining a good life balance between work and home life and to continue building on this great business and its amazing future long after I’m gone.

Robert Johnson

I have been with Richard Alan for over three years, gaining valuable experience as an Engineering Administrator before moving into my current role as Assistant Buyer. In this position, I support procurement activities and help ensure the smooth operation of supply processes. Alongside my role, I am undertaking an apprenticeship in Procurement and Supply to further develop my professional expertise.

I enjoy being part of the team at Richard Alan and am committed to maintaining a positive, collaborative approach while contributing to the company’s continued success. Outside of work, I enjoy training at the gym and taking on new fitness challenges, always striving to bring energy and determination to everything I pursue.

Jamie Harris

Richard Alan was my first role after graduating from university, and entering the industry was a completely new experience for me. I quickly came to appreciate the critical role that manufacturers like Richard Alan play in supporting the Chemical Industry. Since joining 7 years ago, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside highly experienced engineers whose depth of knowledge has been invaluable to my development. The company’s diverse client base has enabled me to visit a wide range of sites across the UK and Ireland, giving me insight into the various engineering challenges that Richard Alan help resolve.

As a Pipework Proposal Engineer, I am responsible for developing technical and commercial proposals for pipework fabrications and installation projects. This role requires working closely with clients across various industries—including oil & gas, chemical processing, renewable and manufacturing—I translate project requirements into accurate cost estimations and comprehensive tender submissions. Each proposal is based on thorough site visits, client-supplied engineering designs, calculations and specifications. My role involves assessing designs, material requirements, and labour resources to deliver CAPEX budgets and project timelines. Clear communication and collaboration with clients are essential to ensure that each solution is both technically sound and commercially competitive.

Muhammad Nadat

I have been at Richard Alan since 2017. Here I am responsible for pressure vessel and tank design, along with the quoting of these items. Previous to Richard Alan, I have worked for 26 years in the Oil & Gas industry all the way from process internals, through vessel and package design, to project management of process packages and ultimately platform design and builds, working both in UK and Internationally, with clients being EPIC contractors or IOCs.

Edward York

I’m Brad Wilson, Sales Director at Richard Alan Engineering, where I’ve proudly served for the best past of four years. With over a decade of experience in process engineering, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with many of the UK’s leading manufacturers across a diverse range of industries—from food and beverage to chemical and beyond.

Before joining Richard Alan, I spent six formative years at Alliance Fluid Handling, where I specialised in hygienic engineering solutions. There, I developed and delivered comprehensive maintenance contracts and emergency breakdown cover, always with a focus on minimising downtime and maximising operational efficiency.

What drives me every day is a deep commitment to exceptional customer service and a genuine appreciation for the vital role engineering teams play in keeping production businesses running smoothly. I believe that reliability, responsiveness, and strong partnerships aren’t just nice-to-haves, they’re essential to success in our industry. Outside of work, I enjoy rugby union and have a real passion for lifting heavy weights.

Brad Wilson

Andy has over 25 years experience within the structural steelwork industry. Working for various design offices around the UK on projects in numerous industries both in the UK and worldwide. 12 years experience running own business providing Tekla detailing services to contractors and fabricators within various sectors of the construction industry.

Overseeing all aspects of the steelwork design department – reviewing tenders alongside sales and estimating team, liaising with clients at project launch to detailed design as the engineering and detailing team develops customers design towards approval, then procurement to production assisting the fabrication shop and site team to ensure completion of the project. Managing design team to keep standards high and planning resources to achieve programme deadlines. Regular site visits and meetings with RAE project managers for design review and project planning. QA on all structural steelwork projects continually reviewing designs to latest industry standards and regulations.

Andy May

Claire is the Human Resources Manager for the Richard Alan Group. Providing HR and Operational support to employees and managers across the group. She has been with the business for almost 15 years having previously worked in the public and financial services sectors.

She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Management, a mental health first aider and holds a qualification in counselling skills.

Claire Westerman – MA FCIPD

I began my career with Bilfinger Industrial Services through an apprenticeship based at Syngenta. As a top-tier COMAH site, it offered me a rich training ground—rotating through disciplines and roles across the full project lifecycle. From MEICA design, structural and civil works, and inspections to workshop fabrication, installations, integrity and reliability engineering, and even a stint with the QSHE department—I’ve worn many hats.

Eventually, I settled into a role as a mechanical and piping engineer. My responsibilities spanned piping and mechanical equipment design (vessels, tanks, pumps, heat exchangers), structural layouts, civil elements, and documentation—all while staying compliant with the ever-watchful eyes of the HSE and local authorities. As I progressed, I led teams of draughtsmen, managed contractor relationships, and oversaw FEED designs for large-scale, multi-million-pound projects.

As Head of Piping Design and Special Projects at RAE, flexibility is key. On the piping side, I manage our design team’s workload—balancing internal resources, client expectations, and workshop needs—while offering guidance and quality checks on all deliverables. I also provide design input myself; I still enjoy getting hands-on with CAD now and again (no sense in getting rusty!). Piping design often overlaps with plant layout, so I coordinate with multiple disciplines to ensure everything fits together seamlessly and safely. In the “Special Projects” sphere, I jump in at the earliest stages—helping clients make sense of their big, often complex ideas. Using my cross-disciplinary experience and end-to-end project knowledge, I support FEED studies and collaborate with our proposals team to shape viable, value-driven solutions and quotations.

Qualifications: HNC in Mechanical Engineering, followed by a range of certified continuous improvement courses from institutions such as ABB and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. These focused on design, pressure systems, codes, and regulations—building a specialisation within the process manufacturing industry.

Luke Noble

I’ve worked at Richard Alan since 2008, moved through different departments over the years gaining a good knowledge of our systems and processes. I currently report to Robert, coordinating the transfer of incoming orders from the proposals team to the projects and production teams. My responsibilities include reviewing labour requirements and collaborating with HR, as well as project and department managers, to ensure customer needs are met, including those related to short-term shutdown work

I have recently joined Richard Alan within their structural Design team. I create drawings for any structural steel requirements for projects, from large support structures for Vessels to small step ups and access stairs
